Labris in Mythology
Labris is an Anatolian origin word and a sign of different meanings in mythology. Improvement, strength, guiding, construction, security are some of the meanings used in history. Labris, with its meaning of “butterfly”, expressed reforming and transformation in ancient religions. From this point of view, events that are the two parts of a whole that are in a continuous change such as; changing of the centuries, two halves of the year,etc. In Mythology a witch named Circe and Athena used this butterfly shaped iron by ataching it to the edge of a wand and from that on “Labris” became a symbol of security and power. Another meaning of Labris is a holy journey of deep thoughts in ancient civilizations such as; ancient Egypt.The shape of the journey path is like a labyrinth or maze. Most appropriate and applicable decisions should be take such as; “where to go?”, “where is more secure?”, “the goal of the journey?” to proceed in this path and to be able to get put of this journey. In most of the documents and books, the words Labrinth and Labirent are said to be originated from “Labris”. With this meaning of Labris, it is used for the structures that has a shape of maze and has things not to be accessed and found. Afterwards, the structure appears as the cities surrounded by walls where the things not to be found are the civilizations. Labris was used as the symbol and principle of protection from attacks and invasions. After the realization that attacks are not only external but also internal, by changing the structure the inner city walls are built besides the outer ones so that step-by-step protection is maintained. Labyrinth, city wall, castle concepts are also used by the people who have a thought of Linux and Open Source Code being more secure platforms. This can be exemplified as: To access a closed-source and open-source program is like to get in to two castles one of which you have no plans of it and do not know where the doors are, but also do not know where the undesired backdoors are; on the other hand you have almost all information of the other castle and many attempts were made to get in and it is impossible to access.
